A search engine indexes Websites. You type in words or phases and a list of sites is returned about your topic. Sometimes the list does not give you what you expected. Try different words and phrases until you find information about your topic. Inaddition to Website searching, you can also look for media files like mp3s, videos, and images.

Search engines use different methods for searching. You will want to look at the directions and tips at each site for complete details.

Google

Google returns pages that contain all of the words you type in the search box. Advanced features allow you to fine tune your search to include or exclude words or phrases. You can also download a Google toolbar that allows you to search directly from your browser. Goole also provide many other features such as free Blog space, Google Groups, Google Maps and Google Earth.

Metasearch option for finding information.

Dogpile

A metasearch engine that retrieves hits from many different search engines. It also provides a tool bar for searching media.

Yahoo

Yahoo provides searches and directory browsing. Other services include emai,l Web page space, and Yahoo Groups.
