Sapsucker Wood
|
The small holes in this juniper are the work of sapsuckers. They drill those wells through the bark to the inner cambium layer, eat the cambium and drink the sap that oozes out. They also feed on insects that gather on the sap.
The sapsucker, as all woodpeckers, is well adapted to the feeding posture. Stiff tail feathers support him while at work and strong neck muscles drive his bill into the bark.
